What is Bilori Journal?
Bilori Journal is a bilingual, Marathi and English journal, affiliated with decoloniszing our bookshelves (a project dedicated to making literature by authors of marginalised and intersectional identities more visible and accessible). Bilori Journal is entirely volunteer-based.
बिलोरी जर्नल काय आहे?
बिलोरी जर्नल हे 'डीकॉलनायझिंग अवर बुकशेल्व्हस' (उपेक्षित आणि 'इंटरसेक्शनल' अशी अस्मिता असलेल्या लेखकांचं साहित्य अधिक दृश्यमान आणि सुलभ व्हावं यासाठी समर्पित असा प्रकल्प) या प्रकल्पाशी संलग्न असलेलं मराठी आणि इंग्रजी द्विभाषिक नियतकालिक आहे आहे. बिलोरी जर्नल हे पूर्णतः स्वयंसेवक-आधारित आहे.
What do we publish?
We wish to publish academic, research and personal essays about books that are under-marketed, lesser-known, suppressed and marginalised. We do not publish book reviews or news pieces.
आम्ही काय प्रकाशित करतो?
विक्रीतंत्रापासून वंचित, अपरिचित, किंवा उपेक्षित अशा साहित्यकृतींचेबद्दलचे अभ्यासपूर्ण संशोधन आणि व्यक्तिगत लेख आम्ही प्रकाशित करतो. पुस्तक परीक्षणं किंवा पत्रकारिता आम्ही प्रकाशित करत नाही.
What is our aim?
We wish to create a platform for critical, analytical discourse about works of literature that remain sidelined by the dominant canon and mainstream media. We wish to contribute to knowledge production in the Marathi language.
आमचा हेतू काय आहे?
संशोधनात्मक आणि मुख्यप्रवाही माध्यमं यांच्याकडून उपेक्षिल्या गेलेल्या साहित्यकृतींबद्दल समीक्षात्मक आणि विश्लेषणात्मक परिसंवादासाठी एक व्यासपीठ तयार करणं हे आमचं उद्दिष्ट आहे. मराठी भाषेत ज्ञाननिर्मिती, समीक्षात्मक विचारपद्धती आणि साहित्यमीमांसा होण्यात साहाय्य्य करण्याचा आमचा उद्देश आहे.
हे व्यासपीठ आम्ही वसाहतवादमुक्त करण्याचा प्रयत्न कसा करत आहोत?
भारतातील बहुतांश लोक बहुभाषिक नसले तरी द्विभाषिक वातावरणात वाढतात. इंग्रजी आणि बऱ्याच वेळा हिंदी या भाषा वसाहतवादोत्तर संदर्भात लादल्या जातात. साहित्याशी विद्वत्तापूर्ण पद्धतीने स्वतःला जोडून घेण्याची त्यांची आवड चिकित्सक मराठी साहित्यिकांना, स्वतःच्या भाषेत व्यक्त करता यावी यासाठी एक मराठी आणि इंग्रजी भाषेत एक द्विभाषिक व्यासपीठ तयार करणं हा बिलोरीमागचा हेतू आहे. अमराठी वाचकांना मराठी आणि इंग्रजीच्या सह-अस्तित्वाचं हे दृश्य परकं वाटू शकतं पण हे दृश्य सादर करून, अभ्यासपूर्ण, बौद्धिक आणि पुरोगामी चर्चांमधून मराठी भाषा वगळली जाणार नाही अशी आशा आम्ही बाळगतो.
असं असलं तरी मराठी भाषेचं राजकीयीकरण आम्हाला पूर्णपणे अमान्य आहे. मराठी भाषेच्या वर्चस्वाचा पुरस्कार करणाऱ्या किंवा इतर भाषा बोलणाऱ्या लोकांच्या विरोधात, त्यांना वगळण्याचं साधन म्हणून मराठी भाषेचा वापर करणाऱ्या कोणत्याही राजकीय पक्षाशी आम्ही संलग्न नाही. सर्वसमावेशकता, बहुविधता, बौद्धिक सहिष्णुता आणि विविध मतांचा स्वीकार या गोष्टींवर आमचा विश्वास आहे.
How are we trying to decolonisze this space?
Most people in India grow up bilingual, if not multilingual. The English language is imposed in a post-colonial context, and in many cases, so is Hindi. Creating a bilingual journal in Marathi and English is an attempt at creating a platform for critical Marathi literary voices to express their passion for critical engagement with literature in their own language. Marathi co-existing with English, and vice versa, is a visual that may seem alienating to a non-Marathi reader, but the accessibility of language, when it’s always facilitated in English or Hindi, leads to the erasure of less popular languages. We seek to lessen the erasure of Marathi as a language of academic, intellectual discourse and progressive thought. Moreover, we also seek to prevent the reduction of the Marathi language to its grammatically and tonally “pure” version. We believe that any particular class does not have a monopoly over deciding which version of Marathi is more “pure” or “appropriate”. Marathi belongs to those who think in Marathi.
We wholeheartedly reject the politicisation of the Marathi language and do not align ourselves with any political party that promotes the dominance of the Marathi language, or that promotes Marathi as a tool of exclusion of peoples who speak a different language.We believe in inclusivity, diversity, intellectual tolerance, and acceptance of differences.

Why is Bilori Journal in Marathi and English specifically?
Simply because it was founded in Pune, Maharashtra, by a person who speaks the two languages. However, we acknowledge the necessity of such journals in any and all languages that exist and will promote other such endeavours on our social media as much and as well as we can.
Who can read Bilori Journal?
Anyone who can read either English or Marathi can read the journal, as we aim to make all articles available in both languages.

बिलोरी जर्नल मराठी आणि इंग्रजीत आहे कारण त्याची संस्थापना, पुण्यात या दोन्ही भाषा बोलणाऱ्या एका व्यक्तीने केली. असं असलं तरी अशा नियतकालिकांची गरज इतर कोणत्याही आणि अस्तित्वात असलेल्या सर्व भाषांना आहे याची जाण आम्हाला आहे आणि अशा इतर प्रकल्पांना आम्ही आमच्या परीने शक्य तितकं प्रोत्साहन देऊ.
बिलोरी जर्नल कोण वाचू शकतं?
इंग्रजी किंवा मराठी वाचू शकणारी कोणतीही व्यक्ती हे जर्नल वाचू शकते. सर्व लेख दोन्ही भाषांमध्ये उपलब्ध करून देणं हे आमचं ध्येय आहे.
